The course provides the social and historical background of the English language, with a focus on the following topics: Indo-European origins; Germanic basis of Old English. The Norman Conquest and the subsequent subjugation of English; the restoration of English as the official language in England; the major steps towards the standardization of English after Renaissance; the colonial and global spread of English.
